They line up the Pan-American Highway leading from Ecuador further south, like fierce sentinels watching over every traveller. Their names roll of your tongue with awe, Sangay, Tunghurahua, Quilotoa, Cotopaxi, Illiniza, Antisana, Pichincha, Reventedor. Some wear a gossamer scarf so as not to frighten you. Cotopaxi, the tallest of the lot is vainly trying to brush off the cloud scarf to reveal his impressive mien. Some sport a thin plume of smoke, like a fancy head gear, others are clothed in green velvety fields of corn.
