Dar-es-Salaam, Maid of the Savannah (2014)
Dar-es-Salaam is besotted with Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest peak which is in a town called Arusha in the north of the country. The hotel I stayed in was called Kilimanjaro, the taxi company that ferried me around was Kilimanjaro, the soft drinks served were called Kilimanjaro as were the toffees! Eventually, after my work in Dar was over, I flew an airline whose aircraft were emblazoned with Kilmanjaro on their bellies so that they were visible even from the ground. I landed in Arusha’s airport also called Kilimanjaro and made my way to the Serengeti.
