Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe (2022)

The Zambezi comes cascading down in torrents that send up massive clouds of spray that gave it the name Mosi-oa-Tunya’ (the smoke that thunders) in the Kololo or Lozi language, and the name is now used throughout Zambia and in parts of Zimbabwe. Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park covers 66 square km. There are four major river systems in the entire African continent – Nile, Niger, Congo and Zambezi, the last watering the southern part of the continent. Rising in the hills of Zambia, the river flows through Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique where it merges with the Indian Ocean. The Chobe in Botswana meets the Zambezi in Kazungula, ,the quadripoint where four nations meet – on the left bank of Chobe is Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, on the right, Botswana. Kazungula bridge has been built directly over the confluence of Chobe and Zambezi. From this point on, Zambia is on the left bank and Zimbabwe on the right.
